Metals can be extracted on the basis of their reactivity .Metals are generally divided into Metals of High ,Medium and Low Reactivity.
Only basis on this Reactivity they can be extracted.
On High Reactivity :
Metals like the K,Na,Ca,Mg and Al are the Metals of high reactivity. They are not found in native state so , can't be reduced as they are high reactants.
They can be extracted from their combined state by Electrolytic Reduction .
In this process, Salts of the metal are taken as Electrolysed . The Metal is deposited at the Cathode (-) and Chlorine at Anode (+).
On Medium Reactivity:
Metals like the Fe,Zn,Pb and Cu are moderate reactives . They are generally found as Sulphides or the Carbonates .
Sulphide ore is heated in the presence of oxygen by Roasting and then reduced.
The Carbonate Ore is heated in absence of air by Calcination and then reduced .
On Low Reactivity:
Metals like the Hg,Ag and Au are low reactants . They are found as Sulphides and are heated in persence of air and then reduced.
