Words that show or express some sort of action or feeling is known as a Verb. Verbs are also known as action words.

What are the types of verbs?

There are two types of verbs. They are ⇒

  • Main Verb (Also known as Lexical Verbs)
  • Helping Verbs (Also known as Auxiliaries Verbs)

There are two types of main verbs. They are ⇒

  • Finite verbs → These types of verbs change their form based on the person, tense and number of objects.

  • Non-finite verbs → These types of verbs do not change their form based on person, tense and number of objects.

There are two types of helping verbs. They are ⇒

  • Primary Verbs ⇒ 'Be' is a primary verb which is used to form the continuous tenses and the passive voice.

  • Modals Verbs ⇒ These verbs add meaning to the main verb present in the sentence by expressing if it is a possibility, ability, obligation or a permission.

Simple Tenses

  • Simple Future Tense → She will play in the garden tomorrow.

Continuous Tenses

Continuous Tenses are tenses representing an action happening or had happened or will be happening. There are three types of continuous tenses. They are ⇒

  • Present Continuous Tense → Rita is dancing on the stage.
  • Past Continuous Tense → Rita was dancing on the stage.
  • Future Continuous Tense → Rita will be dancing on the stage.

Perfect Tenses

Perfect Tenses are tenses that represent an action that is already completed. There are three types of perfect tenses. They are ⇒

Present Perfect Tense → I have been living here since 6 years.

Past Perfect Tense → She had lived here 2 years ago.

Future Perfect Tense → How long will you have lived here by the next year?

Forms of Verb :

» There are 5 forms of verb.

» They are as follows :

1. Root form -

  • It is the base form of the verb.
  • It's used with infinitive many a times.
  • to + verb

eg :

  • I love to watch cricket.
  • I came here to see the parade.

2. Present tense form :

  • Third person → He, She, It
  • These type of verbs are made by adding -s / -es to the root form .

eg :

  • He watches cricket .
  • He plays cricket.

3. Present Participle form :

  • These verbs are made continuous.
  • -ing is added at the last of the root form.

eg :

  • He is playing cricket.
  • He has been playing cricket since he was 5 years old.

4. Past tense form :

  • Usually used to in past tense sentences.
  • They are made by adding -ed to the base form verb.

eg :

  • He played cricket.
  • He danced like a monkey.

5. Past Participle form :

  • They are to past tense verbs.
  • They are usually made by adding -ed at the last of base form verbs. (There are some exceptions like birth → born, cut → cut etc)

eg :

  • He had completed the work.
  • He was born in 1985 .
