The reasons for the versatile nature of carbon are:

  • Carbon can form a single covalent bond (saturated compounds), double and triple covalent bonds (unsaturated compounds) with other atoms. For example, 2 carbon atoms with hydrogen atoms can form ethane, ethene and ethylene.
  • Carbon has the property to make large molecules. This property is called catenation.
  • Carbon has four electrons in its outermost shell. It can lose or gain four electrons to attain a noble gas configuration. So, it can easily combine with four atoms by a single bond. For example, in methane (CH4), carbon is forming a covalent bond with four hydrogen atoms.
