1. When harmful substances like toxic chemicals, sewage, etc., are disposed in the water bodies, it pollutes the water and this is known as Water Pollution. These substances that pollute the water are known as water pollutants.

2. Water gets polluted due to the following factors -:

• Washing of clothes in the water bodies.
• Bathing animals in the water bodies.
• The disposal of toxic chemicals and sewage from industries and factories.
• Disposal of plastic in the water bodies.

3. Potable water is referred to as water that is suitable for drinking. This type of water is clean and transparent. The pH level of the water is 7 and there isn't any microbe present in this type of water.

The methods that purify the water are as follows ⇒

• Filtration → Filtration of water is a physical method in which the impurities present in the water is removed. Candle type filter is one of the popularly known household filters. A reversed osmosis system is present in these types of filters that help to make the water pure.

• Boiling → This is a very commonly used method for making the water pure. Boiling helps to kill the harmful microbes and germs present in the water.

• Chlorination → This is a chemical process for purifying the water. Water is purified by adding chlorine tablets or bleaching powder in the water. While using this process for purification of water, we must be cautious and not use more chlorine tablets than required.

What is water pollution?

The dirty water release by industries & factories into river, streams and ponds destroys the aquatic life. Water pollution cause various diseases like cholera, jaundice, vomiting, loose motion etc.

How can we prevent water pollution?

People from every class of society, be it a politician, farmer, industrialist, educated individuals, artist or workers have casual attitude towards the environmental pollution. The water from industries purified before it is drained into streams or rivers. Government should implement the pollution control policies properly to control industries. We should use water in a judicious way.
