-Central metal ion in a complex shows two different types of valencies as primary valency and secondary valency.

-The primary valency is ionizable and satisfied by negative ions. The secondary valency is non ionizable. It is equal to the co-ordination number of central metal. It is always fixed for a metal. Secondary valencies are satisfied by -ve ions or neutral molecules.

-The primary valencies are non-directional. The secondary valencies are directional. Ions or molecules that are attached to satisfy secondary valencies have a characteristic spatial arrangements. Secondary valency decides the geometry of the complex compound.
