Corrosion is the process of formation of a layer of oxide, sulphide, hydroxide, carbonate or hydrated oxide over a metal in presence or water and air or an acid.
E.g. when an iron article is placed openly in moist climate, it rusts.

This layer of hydrated oxide is reddish brown in colour and is called as rust
