ENDOCRINE SYSTEM :
Animals and Human Body needs certain chemicals for proper growth and development. These chemicals are called Hormones.
The Hormones are produced in organs called Endocrine glands ( which are ductless glands ). due to that, hormones are directly released into the blood stream. Very small quantities of hormones are required by the body for growth and development.
For example :-
♣ Hormone Adrenaline is secreated when you are angry or excited.
♣ The pancreas which controls the sugar metabolism in the blood is regulated by the insulin.
♣ Pituitary gland is located at the base of the brain . It regulates the activity of other endocrine glands, Hence, called Master Gland.
♣ The estrogen Hormone is Female sex hormone.
♣ The Testosterone Hormone is male Sex Hormone.

The endocrine glands and hormone producing diffused tissues/cells located in different parts of the body constitute the endocrine system.
Pituitary, pineal, thyroid, adrenal, pancreas, parathyroid, thymus and gonads (Testis in males and ovary in females) are organised endocrine bodies in our body.
In addition to these, some other organs (e.g., gastrointestinal tract, liver, kidney, heart) also produce hormones.
A brief account of various glands is given below:-
●Hypothalamus
-It regulates a wide spectrum of body functions. This gland release two types of hormones
(i) Releasing hormones (stimulate secretions of pituitary hormones)
(ii)Inhibiting hormones (which inhibits secretions of pituitary hormones)
●Pituirary Gland
-It produces various types of hormones:
(i) Growth Hormone (GH)
(ii) Prolactin (PRL)
(iii) Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH)
(iv) Adrenocorticotrophic Hormone (ACTH)
(v) Luteinizing Hormone (LH)
(vi) Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH)
●Pineal Gland
-Pineal gland secretes a hormone called melatonin.
●Thyroid Gland
-This gland secretes two hormones:
(i)Thyroxine or Tetraiodothyronine hormone
(ii) Triiodothyronine hormone
●Parathyroid Gland
-This gland secrete a peptide hormone called parathyroid hormone (PTH)
●Thymus
-This gland secrete a peptide hormone called thymosins hormone.
●Adrenal Gland
-This gland secretes two hormones:
(i) Adrenaline Hormone
(ii)Epinephrine Hormone
●Pancreas
-This gland secretes two hormones:
(i)Gulcagon Hormone
(ii) Insulin
●Testis (Male Gonad)
-This gland secretes testosterone hormone
●Ovary (Female Gonad)
-This gland secretes two groups of steroid hormones:
(i)Estrogen
(ii) Progesterone
