Explain what is meant by a “leit motif” and give an example of it in Star Wars.

The Harry Potter series, of course, I think Williams is the ONLY composer doing the leitmotif thing on a regular basis anymore. Where Goldsmith focuses on the essence of the film and creates themes to bring that essence to the fore, I can think of no other composer who does anything now beyond an ambient cushion for the images. Oh, a film might have ONE theme....perhaps a slight variation on that theme....but nothing complex.....or so it would seem. It's been a tough year for film scores.
