- by Maya Angelou
Answers
ANSWER:
Maya Angelou in this poem has written about the struggles of being a black (African) American. She felt that African American people’s words went unheard due to the colour of their skin, and in some ways they were even now experiencing servitude. Though during her time the African American people were free, there were even now several restraints on them within the society, making several black (African) Americans feel that they are not free at all.
EXPLANATION:
In the introductory lines of the poem, Angelouelucidates the natural world to be very beautiful. She defines its beauty by saying that it is evening, because of which the entire sky is orange in colour with a picturesque sunset accompanying it and the sun’s rays blending in the colour of the orange sky, making the entire scene awe-inspiring.
According Angelou, the sun symbolises freedom, the sky symbolises glory and the wind symbolises power in her poem. The bird described in the introductory paragraph is a free bird which is metaphor (comparison)for the White American and is free to do whatever it wants and does not have to encounter any form prejudice or racial discrimination.
The free bird can fly in the sky without any restraint and take another flight in the spectacular orange sky and enjoy the splendid sunset as well as its life to the fullest .
Answer:
It means the reflection of the free and lively atmosphere that the bird lives in. The orange colour symbolizes the freedom and happiness enjoyed by the free birds.
