oxidation is removal of hydrogen atom.
it is also addition of oxygen
eg Cu +O2---> CuO

reduction is removal of oxygen atom
it is also addition of hydrogen.
eg CuO+H ----> Cu + H2O

A chemiacal reaction which involves addition of oxygen or removal of hydrogen or loss of electron(s) is called oxidation.

Reduction:
A chemical reaction which involves addition of hydrogen or removal of oxygen or gain of electrons is called reduction.
