A solenoid is a type of electromagnet when the purpose is to generate a controlled magnetic field. If the purpose of the solenoid is instead to impede changes in the electric current, a solenoid can be more specifically classified as an inductor rather than an electromagnet.

Solenoid
A long cylindrical coil consisting of a large number of turns of insulted wire is called solenoid. When some electric current flows through the solenoid, It behave like bar magnet.
- When current increase, magnetism also increases.
- The magnetic line of force are parallel near the center of coil. Thus produced magnetic field is said to be uniform.
- The magnetic line of force are in same direction within the space enclosed by the coil.
- The magnetic lines of force are at right angle to the plane of the coil.
