Maximilian Robespierre (1758-1794) was the leader of Jacobins Political Club. His government ruled France 1793-1794. The one year is also known as "Reign of Terror" because Robespierre followed a policy of severe control and punishment.
Robespierre's government issued laws placing maximum ceiling on wages and prices. Meat and bread were rationed and peasants were forced to sell their grains at the prices fixed by the government. Churches were shut down and buildings were converted in barracks and offices.
Robespierre carried his policies so relentlessly that even his supporters began to demand moderation. Finally, he was convicted and guillotined by the court in July 1794.
