We can use gases for this purpose. But air is widely available without any cost so it isused. Steel is used for railway lines because it has a high tensile strength and appropriate hardness. It has resistance to internal and surface cracks.

Hey buddy here is your answer :

( a ) Air is used to inflate tyres because they can be compressible upto some extent of pressure. Also air is widely available.

( b ) Steel is used to make railway lines because it is rust free and has high tensile strength. Also it has resistance to internal and external cracks.

Hope it helps.

Have a good day dear.
