Explanation:

a) An antacid, such as milk of magnesia, act as a base, and react with excess acid and neutralize its effect, thus giving relief. ... When applied in the skin, it reacts with the acid, and neutralizes its effect, thus giving relief.

b) Ants when bite injects an acid which causes a burning sensation, calamine solution is basic in nature. It neutralizes the acid and gives relief from pain.

c)Factory wastes contain acids which if untreated and discharged into water bodies will cause harm to fish and other aquatic organisms living in water bodies. Therefore, they should first be treated with basic substances to neutralise them and then discharged into water bodies.

Give Reason for the following Questions

\sf\Large\color{#b30059}{Question1.}

Why an antacid is taken when you suffer from acidity?

\sf\large\color{pink}{Answer:}

Acidity is caused due to the excess production of acids in the stomach. An antacid contains bases, such as milk of magnesia(magnesium hydroxide, gelusil,etc. These bases react with excess of acids and neutralize the effect of excessive acid and brings relief.

Why Calamine solution is applied on the skin when an ant bites?

\sf\large\color{pink}{Answer:}

Calamine solution contains zinc carbonate which is basic in nature. Therefore, it is applied on the skin to neutralize the effect of formic acid.

\sf\Large\color{#b30059}{Question3.}

Why factory waste neutralised before disposing it into the water bodies.

\sf\large\color{pink}{Answer:}

The factory effluents are acidic in nature. If it is discharged directly into rivers it can lower the pH of the river and cause harm to aquatic life. Hence slaked lime is added to neutralize the acid and it won't be that much harmful to the rivers.
