they will receive excess of water n will not get proper nutrients required for their growth

because, it will not be able to obtain food from the ground if it remains water clogged... as we know that roots help the plants in nitrogen fixation which is a very inmportant for a plant.... so if its water clogged nitrogen fixation will not happen.
