Pressure is force divided by area so by decreasing the area on which the force is concentrated, more pressure is produced. This is very useful in the case of an iron nail as it drives the nail easily into the wall. This is also why it is easier to fix a sharp nail on the wall rather than a blunt nail. This principle is also behind the sharpening of knives as this decreases the area of contact.
