this happens due to the Archimedes principle. the density of ship is less per volume of water but the density of needle is more so, one floats and the other sinks.

An iron ship Floats because it is shaped such that it will contain air within its hull and therefore the average density of the ship as a whole including cavities and all the air spaces is less than the water and therefore it floats.
