it is because the boiling water in the kettle is in liquid state, the molecules in liquid state are more closely packed than they are in gases. when water changes into steam molecules get far apart and occupy more space. the ratio of volume is to steam is 1:1600. thus ,boiling water in a small kettle can fill whole kitchen with steam
