explain why a straight pencil appers to bend when dipped in water?

hansikachhikara4: I'd give a diagram to explain it but I can't answer. Sorry sweet but I'll try to explain it.
hansikachhikara4: The light ray when goes from rarer medium i.e air to denser medium i.e water then it bends away from the normal and when extended it back direction meets our eyes.

due to refraction of light. The light refraction gives the pencil a slight magnifying effect, which makes the angle appear bigger than it actually is, causing the pencil to look crooked.
