Explain why a substance can no longer be compressed when it changes from gas to a liquid?

There's lots of space between gas molecules, when they're compressed or cooled, they get closer together until there's a state change, and a liquid is formed. Liquid can still be compressed, but much less than a gas. If it's compressed enough, it will become a solid.
