There are many different types of Ac units. Ceiling mounted, wall mounted and floor mounted units. Despite what many people here have wrote about cold air displacing warm air being the reasoning behind Ac unit positioning, this is not the case.
While it is true that cool air falls and warm air rises, this comes into play more so with ventilation, with many fresh air-in vents located higher up than some return air vents although in many applications and for ease of design they are usually located at the same height.
Design,aesthetics and practicallity play a big part as well as obvious ones such as the load being cooled. In a large open plan office for example ceiling cassette type units will be hung throughout the floor as wall or floor mounted units wouldn't evenly cool (or heat) the conditioned space and many of these units simply wouldn't have the same output required to cool an office as they often have such high heat loads. In a domestic situation it may be more practical to have a wall or floor mounted unit where the heat load is much lower.
