Explain why alkali metals are used in photoelectric cells

Alkali metals are used in photoelectric cells because they have a high electro positive character due to which they can convert themselves into ions without much energy required in the ejection of electron.
Since photoelectric cells generate a small amount of energy, these alkali metals are best suited for making these cells..

Alkali metals used to have low ionisation enthalpies and therefore, the electrons are easily ejected when exposed to light. Among alkali metals, cesium has lowest ionisation enthalpy and hence it can show photoelectric effect to the maximum extent and therefore preferred in photoelectric cell.
