Explain why alkaline medium inhibits the rusting of iron.

Rusting of iron is due to the presence of H+ ions. Alkaline medium reduces the concentration of H+ ions by increasing the concentration of OH- ions. (It will neutralize H+ ions) and inhibit rusting.
