The bicarbonate alkalinities present in water combie with alum when alum is added to muddy water. It results in the formation of a precipitate and deposits at the bottom of water. As a result, most of the impurity gets deposited at the bottom of water and we get clean water.

Explanation:

Alum is added to muddy water because as alum is heavier than the muddy water which means  small sand particles  are lighter and stick to the alum and as alum is heavier it settles at the bottom of any container and the muddy water gets cleaned.
