becuse amoeba is concious about its surroundings ( which is a defining feature of living beings) that is why it develops pseodopodia when reaches near food but sand does not do anything of such kind.

Amoeba is living because it is a unicellular organism, it is consicous about the surroundings, it obtains it food so it is a heterotroph whereas sand particle is made up of molecules, it is not aware of its surrounding so it is a non living
