An unbalanced force will cause a change in momentum because we know if the resultant of all forces is not zero, it is unbalanced force. So, if a resultant is not zero it will cause acceleration in it and acceleration means change in velocity/time . Thus, velocity changes and if velocity changes then momentum will also change.
