atomic number is more important than atomic mass (weight) because it's the most basic thing. without atomic number, everything will be complicated. like electronic configuration, calculating valency, valence electrons etc.

bcoz the no of electrons depend on the atomic no so if we only knew atm mass then we would not have been able to predict the reactivity of the elements and also we would not have been able to differentiate among metals,non metals and metalloids . Also the properties of the atoms and their reactivity depend on the no of electrons in the valence shell
