Benzene and polycyclic aromatic compounds containing more than two benzene rings fused together are toxic and carcinogenic (cancer causing). Many polycyclic aromatic compounds are formed by incomplete combustion of organic materials like tobacco, coal and petroleum. In human body, benzene is oxidized to an epoxide. Benzopyrene is converted into an epoxy diol. These compounds undergo various biochemical reactions and can react with DNA and cause cancer.
