Calcium metal after reacting with water starts floating on it's surface because -

• When the calcium metal reacts with water,the calcium hydroxide and hydrogen gas are evolved as the products of this chemical reaction.

• Now,this hydrogen gas forms bubble in the water and these hydrogen bubbles apply a upward facing buoyancy force on the calcium metal and that's why the calcium metal becomes able to float on the surface of the water.

• Chemical equation of the above mentioned phenomenon is -

Ca + H2O ---> Ca(OH)2 + H2 (g)

• Sodium metal also floats like this on the surface of the water.

Answer:

After calcium reacts with water, hydrogen gas is released in the reaction. This bubbles of hydrogen gas stick to the surface of the metal. The buoyancy of the gas bubbles lifts the calcium up. Therefore, calcium floats on water.
