Carbon has four electrons in its outermost shells. That means that either it has lose 4 electrons or gain 4 electrons to gain stability ,this requires a lot of energy.
So,to overcome this problem, carbon shares electrons with another element to form stability.
Main reasons for carbon compound forming large number of bonds:-
1.Tetravalency
2.Catenation property
Carbon generally forms covalent compounds and covalent compounds are weaker than ionic compounds.
