it is because the atomoc no of carbon is 6 so its outermost orbit contain 4 electrons so it cannot take electron or not loss own 4 electron to stablity. it can only share own element to other atom so it make covalent bond and due selflinking and tetravalancy to make large chain.

carbon forms compounds mainly by covalent bonds because valency of C is 4.carbon do not form ionic bond because C can either gain 4 electrons or can loose 4 electrons.
c can not gain 4 electrons because it's nucleus can't hold 6 protons to 10 electrons and carbon can not lose 4 electrons because for loosing 4 electrons it need more energy. therefore
carbon shares it's electrons and form covalent bond.
