Carbon contains 4 electrons in its outermost shell...it is not possible to remove 4 electrons from the shell to become stable as it requires a lot of energy neither it is possible to gain 4 electrons as the nucleus would not be able to handle it therefore carbon neither losses electrons nor gains it and makes covalent bonds to become stable
