here are the reasons for versatile nature of carbon compound:
☆ catenation: it is self linking capacity of carbon. you see hydrocarbons are having many carbons which form bonds with each other this is because of their small size.
note: silicon is also having self linking capacity but it is bigger than carbon that is why it only forms around 7-8 links.
☆ multiple bonds: carbon is able to form multiple bonds with other elements which can be single double or triple. forming the compounds ending with ane, ene and yne.
ex: propane, propene, propyne etc.
☆ tetravalency: it can form bonds with many elements at once. for example halogens.
