here are the reasons for versatile nature of carbon compound:

catenation: it is self linking capacity of carbon. you see hydrocarbons are having many carbons which form bonds with each other this is because of their small size.

note: silicon is also having self linking capacity but it is bigger than carbon that is why it only forms around 7-8 links.

multiple bonds: carbon is able to form multiple bonds with other elements which can be single double or triple. forming the compounds ending with ane, ene and yne.

ex: propane, propene, propyne etc.

tetravalency: it can form bonds with many elements at once. for example halogens.

Carbon is a versatile element and is found in many different chemical compounds, including those found space.

Carbon is versatile because it can form single, double, and triple bonds.

It can also form chains, branched chains, and rings when connected to other carbon atoms
