Explain why cation are smaller and anions larger in radius than their parent atoms

Cations are formed by the loss of the electrons, thus when the electrons are lost, the attraction of the nucleus toward the outermost shell increases, as a result the size of the atom decreases.Thus,Cations are smaller than parent attom.

Anions are formed by the gain of the electrons, thus when the electrons are added in the outermost shell, the attraction of the nucleus towards the outermost shells decreases as a result of which the size of the atom.
 increases.Thus, Anions are bigger than parent atom.

A cation is an ion that has a positive charge while an anion is an ion that contains negative charge. This is the basic concept of cation and anion, but this information is not enough to say about size of ions.

So, another concept of ions are that cations are the elements that have lost an electron from its valence shell to attain stability. Also, anions are the elements that have gained electron from other element to attain stability.

We know that a cation is smaller in size because it has lost one electron from the valence shell, so the total number of electron is less is than original element. But the proton number remains same, as a result there is a greater attraction between proton and electron. Thus, the size of atom get smaller and hence the cation is smaller than original atom.

We know that anion is larger in size because it has gained one electron from other atom. So, the number of electrons is more. But, the proton number remain same, as a result there is a outward force among electrons and protons. Thus, an anion is larger in size than original atom.
