Answer: We need consumer awareness so we cam be informed and can make skilled choices and discriminate. For example: We must know about the Right to Choose or we can easily be forced by a shopkeeper into buying additonal items. Again, it is important that we know about the Right to Readressal so we can seek compensation/replacement for defective goods/services.

In order to maximize their profits, traders can go to any extent. They can charge a price higher than the MRP, indulge in unfair trade practices like hoarding, under weighing etc.

Ex. The greed for money led to an enormous increase in the rise of prices of onions in 1999.

The need for consumer consciousness was felt all the more when some unethical and dishonest traders began indulging in adulteration of food, edible oil, milk, ghee etc.

This posed a threat to the health and well-being of a consumer.
