In a metal there are many free electrons and positively charged atoms these free electrons move in any direction the like. But when the metal wire connected to a battery, these electrons move in a definite direction. During their movement they collide with these positively charged atoms. Thus they do not move in an increasing speed. Thus the obstruction caused to the electrons during their movement is known as resistance.

Question:

Explain why does a metal wire when connected to a cell offer resistance to the flow of current.

Answer:

A metal wire when connected to a cell offer resistance to the flow of current because nothing in this world is 100% completed or pure.

No metal wire is a pure conductor nor any insulator is pure insulator.

The best conductor wire is silver but silver wire also have resistance of 1.6 × 10^-8 ohm at the temperature of 20° C.
