the volume of air left behind after forceful respiration is called as residual volume and it's around 1000 ml which is enough for exchange of gases.

It is so because there is a continuous need of breathing for our body for our existence if there will be no breathing we may die, breathing is necessary for providing oxygen to our parts for their continuous working,forceful exhalation may not affect our body to stop respiration or breathing,so therefore during the breathing cycle even after forceful exhalation the exchange of gases continues.
