Hi there ...
Evaporation is the change of liquid into vapor before reaching its boiling point.
Evaporation is a surface phenomenon.
It occurs only at the top surface of water.
Evaporation does not take place throughout the liquid.
One of the factors that affect the rate of evaporation is the surface area.
When surface area decreases , evaporation also decreases.
Also , when surface area increases , rate of evaporation increases.

Answer:
Evaporation is a surface phenomenon because it occurs in the surface. For example when we put wet clothes for drying we spread them out so that the surface area gets increased. When the surface area increases the water will get enough space to get into vapour stage and thus evaporation happens easily.
