it is because basalt is extrusive igneous rocks(rocks formed when the lava solidifies on the surface of earth) whereas gabro is intrusive igneous rock(rocks formed when magma solidifies within the earth's crust at intermediate depth) ..
they have larger crystals because of the slow cooling of magma within the earth's crust..
that is why they are also known as hypobyssal rocks..
