heyy dear ur answer........
1.--Not only air , you can use other gases specially to inflate the tyres. Because of its availability it is used to inflate tyres. And air/ gases used to inflate the tyres because they can be compressible upto some extent of pressure.
2.because--Modern track typically uses hot-rolled steel with a profile of an asymmetrical rounded I-beam. Unlike some other uses of iron and steel, railway rails are subject to very high stresses and have to be made of very high-quality steel alloy.....
