Grignard reagents are very reactive. They react with the moisture present in the apparatus or the starting materials (RX or Mg).

The reaction is as follows :-

R MgX + HOH ---------) R — H + Mg(OH) X

Therefore, Grignard reagents must be prepared in anhydrous conditions to prevent such immediate reactions of the same.

Compounds like water, alcohol and amines which contain active hydrogen react with Grignard reagents to form alkanes.

Example:

CH3MgI + HO-H -------- CH4 + MgI(OH)

CH3MgI + C2H5OH ------- CH4 + MgI(OC2H5)
