The halides of beryllium fume in moist air because they are hygroscopic in nature and they react with moist air to produce fumes due to hydrolysis. As a result of hydrolysis, they produce an acidic solution.
On the other hand, all other halides of alkaline earth metals are known to be ionic in nature and as their ionic character increases( covalent character decreases), the probability of undergoing hydrolysis also decreases.Hence, they do not fume in moist air unlike beryllium.
