Explain why hcl is a gas but hf is a liquid at ordinary temp

This is due to a stronger inter-molecular force named hydrogen bonding, that allows two molecules of HF or H2O to strongly interact with each other. In fact, the forces of hydrogen bonding are strong enough to create a whole “network” of weakly bonded molecules to stay together.
