Explain why hexagonal close packing is more efficient than square close packing???

The reason behind that is, in the square close packing a central sphere is in contact with four other spheres, while in the hexagonal close packing a central sphere is in contact with six other spheres. Hence, the hexagonal close packing is more efficient because leaves less space unoccupied by the sphere.
