hydrogen and oxygen are separate elements whereas water is a compound as it is the combination of hydrogen and oxygen ( H2O) . hence water cannot be considered as an element.

it is so because hydrogen is made up of only one kind of atoms and same for the o2 but water with the formula H2O is made up of more than one kind of atom and is a compound
