Explain why ice has lower density than water?

Water contains H2O molecules more compactly than in ice.

In ice there is hexagonal packed structure.

Their packaging in ice leads to small holes in between them which increases the volume.

DSo if water and ice both contains 10 molecules of H2O then molecules in water would have less volume then those in ice.

Since density = mass /volume

Water has high density
