explain why ionic compounds have high melting point

In ionic compound there is a strong attraction force between atoms which require very large amount of heat to break this force .. Ionic compounds are very strong. A lot of energy is required to break them. Therefore ionic compounds have high melting point.

This is because of the strong attractive electrostatic forces holding the oppositely charged ions together and a large number of ionic bonds in the crystal lattice. These require a lot of thermal energy to overcome and hence have both high melting and boiling points.
