A two-stage rocket is normally the minimum requirement for launch of standard satellites and to place them in orbit around the earth. This is so because, we have to take into consideration the weight of the satellite, the weight of fuel required to reach till the orbit etc.
A two or multi-stage rocket uses multiple rocket stages, each containing their own engine, fuel and propellent. When each stage uses up its fuel/propellent, it is discarded, thereby reducing the weight of rocket/satellite and increasing fuel efficiency.
