If plants are watered too often, the air pockers in the soil will get clogged up. Thus the plants wouldn't be able to take air from the roots. In this case plants respire anaerobically, that is, without oxygen but this produces ethyl alcohol. Ethyl alcohol ultimately kills the plant.
