Explain why Kym is incorrect.

Fifty students were eating lunch in the school cafeteria. The ratio of boys to girls was 25:25. Mrs. White asked Kym to explain what that ratio meant. Kym said it meant that 25% of the students in the cafeteria were boys.

Hello mate,

x = 150 people at dinner

step-by-step explanation:

(2/5) x - had fish

(1/3) x - had chicken

the sum of this two fractions is: 2/5 + 1/3

first, we must bring these two fractions to the same denominator.

first fraction we will multiply with number 3 and get:

(2/5) · 3 = 6/15

second fraction we will multiply with number 5 and get:

(1/3) · 5 = 5/15

now we can calculate the sum of this two fraction:

6/15 + 5/15 = 11/15

the fraction of the people which had lamb is :

(4/15) x = 40 => x = 40 : (4/15) = 40 · 15/4 = 150

x = 150 people had dinner.

god with !

Kym is wrong because ratio is always calculated by dividing two quantities.

  1. Kym said that the ratio of boys to girls is 25:25 that means it is 1:1, but when asked to explain it he meant that the boys were 25%.
  2. According to Kym's ratio percentage of boys must be equal to percentage of girls, which is not true.
  3. Therefore the correct ratio of boys to girls is ( 25% / (100-25) % ) that is ( 25 / 75 )
  4. The resulting ratio is 1 : 3 .
